Asher’s Chocolate is only the start of Jack Asher’s legacy. Of course, a big part of the legacy is both the First Presbyterian Church in Germantown (FPCG) and Keystone State Boychoir (KSB). FPCG serves as KSB’s home. Jack Asher was the founding Board President of KSB, what would eventually become Commonwealth Youthchoirs (CY). Today, 800 young people sing in five different programs in Pennsylvania and New Jersey as part of the region’s largest – and one of the country’s finest – youth choral arts organizations. It all began with Jack at the helm.

To celebrate Jack’s birthday, on March 1st, at 3:00 pm and at 6:00 pm, CY will present the third annual Asher’s Legacy – CY Remembers Jack. All proceeds will benefit the The Jack Asher Scholarship Fund, so that more children in Germantown and beyond can be transformed through the power of making music together.

Though Jack never played an instrument or sang in a choir, he had a passion for music because he understood its power to transform a young person’s life. These were his words, and they serve as CY’s mission statement. Jack loved organ music and choral music, so music that involved both he especially loved.

In his honor, at the concert on March 1, our singers will be showcasing the diversity of our repertoire, with our young people delivering a stirring. You can expect to hear many Elton John classics, such as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Rocketman, but with the power and skill of 200 youth choristers behind the complicated music and multitude of harmonies.

At the first benefit concert held on Jack’s birthday in 2018, Commonwealth Youthchoirs renamed its scholarship fund the “Jack Asher Scholarship Fund.”  All proceeds from the Asher’s Legacy concert event will support singer scholarships.
